Charcoal, sake,
and fourteen
seats at the bar.

A small izakaya off the Currumbin Creek road. Binchōtan grill, a sake list that changes with what we can get, and a kitchen you can watch from your stool.

Where to sit

Three ways to eat here.

The counter is the best seat in the room and the hardest to get. Book it two weeks out for a Friday, or take a Tuesday and have the chef to yourself.

席
The counter
À la carte

Fourteen stools facing the binchōtan grill. Order as you go, ask what's good, watch it cooked. Two hours.

卓
Tables
À la carte

Five tables of two to four in the back room. Quieter, better for a conversation, same menu.

任
Omakase, Thursdays
$110pp

Eight courses, chef's choice, six seats only. Sake pairing an extra $65. Booked out about three weeks ahead.

The sake list

Forty bottles, and someone who'll talk you through them.

By the glass, the carafe or the bottle. If you tell us what you're eating and what you usually drink, we'll get it right. Three to start with:

Sake poured from a ceramic tokkuri into a small cup
純米

Dewazakura Dewasansan

Yamagata · Junmai Ginjo

Green apple and pear, light body, very easy. The one we pour when somebody says they don't like sake.

$16 glass · $72 bottle
生酛

Daishichi Kimoto

Fukushima · Kimoto Junmai

Made the old slow way. Earthy, savoury, a bit of mushroom. Warm it and drink it with the grilled mackerel.

$18 glass · $88 bottle
濁り

Tsukasabotan Nigori

Kōchi · Nigori

Cloudy, unfiltered, faintly sweet. Cuts through the karaage better than beer does.

$15 glass · $68 bottle

Also: four Japanese whiskies, highballs made properly, local Currumbin beer on tap, and a short list of Australian riesling and chardonnay that works with this food.

Reservations

Nineteen seats. Book early.

We hold four counter stools each night for walk-ins, first in. Everything else is booked, and Friday and Saturday go about two weeks ahead.

Reservations are taken over the phone. It's a nineteen-seat room and the chef wants to know who's coming, what you can't eat and whether you want the counter or the back room — that's a two-minute conversation, not a form.

★★★★★

"Sat at the counter on a Tuesday and basically had a two-hour conversation with the chef about charcoal. The wagyu skewer alone is worth the drive from Brisbane."

"Booked the omakase for our anniversary. Eight courses, no misses, and they'd noted the shellfish allergy without us having to remind them on the night."

"The sake list is the real thing and the staff actually know it. Asked for something to go with the mackerel and got a warm kimoto I'd never have picked."

Hana S.
★★★★☆

"Hard to get in, small, and not cheap — all true. Also the best Japanese food south of Brisbane. Book two weeks out and stop complaining."
