The solo takeaway order: a quiet shift worth designing your menu around

The Australian Bureau of Statistics has been saying it for years: lone-person households are one of the fastest-growing groups in the country. I see it in restaurant order tickets too — a single main, no sides, no drink. Not because that person didn't want more, just because nothing on the menu was built with them in mind.

Solo diners are quietly working out a few things before they order: is this too much food for one person, do I have to buy a share plate just to get the dish I actually want, and what's this actually going to cost me. None of that needs a menu overhaul to fix — just a few dishes clearly described as a single serve, one sensible pairing with an honest total price, and a note on what travels well as takeaway.

The easiest way to know if it's working is to try it. Pick two or three dishes, describe them for one person, and watch what happens over a couple of weeks. That only works if you can actually change your menu quickly — which is the whole reason a website beats a PDF that never gets touched.

Got a dish you want to reframe, or a new one-person option to add? Send it through and I'll have it live within the monthly cycle — same day if it's urgent, for $30.
